Audit the Machine: 4 Ways to Force PMax & ASC+ to Actually Prospect

Google’s Performance Max and Meta’s Advantage+ Shopping (ASC+) are the most powerful scaling engines digital advertising has ever seen. When they hit their stride, it feels like printing money.
But right now, platform reps are urging you to let the algorithms run completely unsupervised. "Remove your exclusions." "Drop your cost caps." "Let the AI do its thing."
Here is a more accurate way to look at it: PMax and ASC+ are like hiring a ruthless, commission-only enterprise sales rep.
They are absolute killers at hitting their quota. But without a strict set of rules, they won't go out and cold-call net-new business. They'll just stand next to your cash register, hand their business card to customers already in line to buy, and expect a commission.
Algorithms aren't out to get you. They're just lazy. Here is how elite media buyers are managing the machine this Q4: not by fighting the AI, but by auditing its books.
The Bottom-Funnel Trap
When you launch a wide-open AI campaign, it doesn't immediately go out and prospect high-intent, net-new buyers. It goes straight to the bottom of the funnel to harvest the easiest conversions it can find.
On Meta, tests consistently show ASC+ aggressively targeting your past purchasers and highly engaged Instagram followers. The campaign dashboard will report a beautiful 5.0x ROAS, but your blended client revenue won't actually move. The machine just took credit for your email marketing.
Google’s PMax does the exact same thing with your branded search terms. The system will happily charge you for a click to intercept a customer who literally typed your client's exact URL into the search bar.
If you want the algorithm to actually grow your business, you have to block its access to the easy wins.
The Inventory Reality Check
Once the AI pads its stats with your existing customers, what does it do with the rest of your budget? It looks for the cheapest impressions on the internet.
Google’s Display Network and mobile app placements are notoriously riddled with low-quality sites and accidental "fat-finger" clicks from users trying to close an ad on a free mobile game. The ANA's programmatic transparency report proved just how much of the open web is pure waste.
Because PMax obscures placement-level performance reporting, your prospecting budget can easily become a slush fund to pay out Google's lowest-tier AdSense publishers. You think you are buying premium YouTube Shorts placements, but the machine is buying accidental clicks on a flashlight app to keep your CPCs down.
Setting the Guardrails
You can't out-math the machine, but you can dictate its boundaries. Real operators don't shut PMax or ASC+ off; they just change their incentive structure.
Before you scale your Q4 budgets, implement these mandatory guardrails:
1. Enforce Meta's ASC+ Boundaries
Do not trust Meta's default 5% existing customer cap. Upload your complete, up-to-date Klaviyo 180-day purchaser list directly into the account settings and strictly define who your existing customers are.
If ASC+ still refuses to hunt for net-new traffic, pull the budget back and force the spend through a standard CBO.
2. Mandate Google’s Brand Exclusions
You must apply Brand Exclusions to every single PMax campaign in your account. Force the algorithm to actually prospect.
Let your dedicated, heavily controlled Standard Shopping or Search campaigns capture the branded intent, and make PMax work for its ROAS.
3. Weaponize Placement Scripts
Google makes it deliberately difficult to exclude mobile apps in PMax, but smart buyers are using third-party PMax placement scripts to automatically extract exactly where their ads are showing.
Once you have the data, pass massive negative placement lists (blocking all .app extensions) to your Google rep to apply at the account level.
4. Test NCA (New Customer Acquisition) Goals
If a client demands aggressive top-of-funnel growth, switch PMax to "Only bid for new customers."
Your in-platform CPA will skyrocket immediately, and ROAS will drop. Don't panic. That is simply what actual cold acquisition costs when it isn't subsidized by retargeting.
Stop letting platform reps manage your money. Let the platforms' AI do the targeting, but you dictate the boundaries.
